The pattern on this basketball commemorates the work of Cheyenne-Arapaho artist Edgar Heap of Birds. It is inspired by a series of paintings titled Neufs for Hawaii (2022) and is featured as a large-scale installation on two painted basketball courts located at Murray Park in Long Island City, Queens, New York. Edgar chose the color blue because it represents “an optimistic sky, or water” and also because it asserts Indigenous sovereignty over a site deemed public property.
Heap of Birds is an artist, advocate, and educator whose work raises awareness for worldwide Native history and land acknowledgement. The Edgar Heap of Birds Basketball is a standard size 7. The artwork is digitally printed and debossed on faux-leather. (Please note that using the ball for play will cause the print to fade.) The ball comes partialy inflated, along with a black nylon net carry bag. This product was designed by Kindred Studio(TM) in partnership with Common Practice(TM) and Edgar Heap of Birds.
